Art of James Turrell - In Naoshima Japan, and Canberra Australia

James Turrell's Art installation "Skyspace"
at Canberra National Gallery of Art
I first discovered the artworks of James Turrell at Naoshima, a small island in the Japan Inland Sea.

They are located in museums built and operated by the Benesse Corporation, and designed by architect Tadao Ando.

These museums also contain some other very unique artworks.

On a recent trip to Canberra Australia, I found another work "Skyspace" by the same artist, photographs featured here give a clue only to the experience of actually moving through and resting in the work.

The works at Naoshima are more extensive and possibly more spectacular.

As no photography was allowed in the Naoshima museums, I have no photos of my own to share, but in reality the effects of light and space are so subtle that you can only really appreciate them on location.
